Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Treatment
Erectile Dysfunction, less conspicuously referred to as ED affects more than 50% of men aged between 40-70 years old, with transient ED affecting millions more. Those suffering from ED usually turn to PDE5 inhibitors such as Viagra, Cialis or Vardenafil with the hopes of forming or sustaining an erection.
The EMPIRE Centre for Regenerative Medicine brings to Manila, and the Philippines, the latest innovation in the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction (ED); for Erectile Dysfunction Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT).
From the company that created the famed ‘Da Vinci’ machine, comes the PiezoWave Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) for Erectile dysfunction that uses advanced acoustics technology that focuses on the blood vessels in the penis, promoting neovascularization in the shaft and crus.
Diabetic or Vasculogenic ED patients whom are unable to benefit from conventional ED treatments will be able to benefit immensely from the PiezoWave 2 Linear Focused Shockwave Therapy.
Those who are unresponsive to conventional oral ED treatments, typically referred to as ‘severe ED patients’, tend to benefit immensely from ESWT. Previously, their initial solution had only been vacuum pumps, injections or even implants. Studies conducted on these patients show that post treatment 70% become responsive to conventional ED medications.
The PiezoWave 2 Linear Focused Shockwave Therapy for erectile dysfunction, is able to achieve these results as, apart from promoting neovascularization of blood vessels in the penis, it also triggers angiogenesis, which is the development of new blood vessels in the penis, allowing increased blood flow, which is pivotal in forming and maintaining an erection.
An added benefit of undergoing Erectile Dysfunction Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is that the treatment protocol does not involve the use of any pharmaceuticals. The shockwave treatment is painless and causes no side-effects or systemic load on other organs or healthy tissues.
Shockwaves have been used as a standard treatment option in medicine for more than 30 years. The shockwaves are generated outside the body, transferred to the patient at the skin surface and then focused with pinpoint accuracy to reach the target tissue. Lithotripsy – the fragmentation of kidney stones – was one of the fi rst applications to use shockwaves to treat patients. Today, mobile shockwave systems are used for wound healing and to treat various orthopedic symptoms such as calcific shoulder, tennis elbow, and heel spur.
Many years of research have now resulted in the development of new, elongated shockwave types, which allow clinicians to treat larger tissue areas, such as the corpus cavernosum.
A number of complex positive effects of shockwaves on human tissue are known to medical science and have been documented in recent years. With regard to treating erectile dysfunction, marked improvements in micro-circulation together with the formation of new blood vessels in the penis (penile vasculature) after shockwave treatment are particularly significant.
The non-invasive painless PiezoWave 2 Linear Focused Shockwave Therapy procedure is performed over a series of brief visits to EMPIRE. Patient privacy is protected at all times and a doctor and an assisting male technician conduct the treatment. There is no sedation or anesthesia required. The therapy head is placed on the corpus cavernosum and moved in a longitudinal direction.
Depending on the case and availability of the patient, the treatment protocol is adjusted accordingly. Typically 6 sessions are recommended, with sessions being conducted bi-weekly over 3 consecutive weeks.
For patients from abroad, the 6 sessions can be conducted 3 times a week (every other day) for 2 consecutive weeks. Dubbed as the ‘Medical Tourism’ protocol, there are no harmful effects from undergoing PiezoWave 2 Linear Focused Shockwave Therapy on consecutive days and the efficacy of the treatment is not affected.
How is the treatment done?
Unlike conventional ED treatments, such as oral medications, the PiezoWave 2 Linear Focused Shockwave Therapy is a permanent fix that addresses one of the chief root causes of ED. Discernable improvement in the erectile function of the penis is visible after two weeks from the first session.
Recent clinical studies revealed that patients reported a high rate of satisfaction even after more than two years post-treatment – all without the reliance of PDE5 inhibitors (Viagra, Cialis etc.). In clinical tests, PiezoWave 2 Linear Focused Shockwave Therapy has shown significant long-term effectiveness. The results of these tests were further confirmed by a double-blind placebo controlled study of a large group of patients.
